Cameron Smith Memorial Wins People's Choice Award

(Kanata, Canada) Friday, February 26, 2010 - The Cameron Smith Memorial Fund, a Kanata-based non-profit organization supported by the SohoPortal Community Initiative Program, was awarded the 2010 Kanata Chamber of Commerce People's Choice Award for Community Support - Non Profit Organization of the Year Award (Kanata). Earlier this week, it was also announced that the Fund had reached its fundraising goal of $100,000.

As a registered non-profit organization, the Cameron Smith Memorial Fund has been raising monies since 2005 to assist disadvantaged bantam aged youth play minor hockey. Interest earned on capital held in the Fund is being allocated to provide financial bursaries to help disadvantaged, Bantam-aged male and female local hockey players. By disbursing payments using only the interest earned by the fund, the objective is to ensure the Fund remains intact as a lasting tribute and legacy to Cameron and the values of Community and Friendship for which he was so well known.

SohoPortal Launches OK Clean Water Website

(Ottawa, Canada) Wednesday, December 16, 2010 - SohoPortal is pleased to announce the launch of the OK Clean Water Project website, a non-profit initiative dedicated to bringing clean water to the tiny unserviced villages of Africa.

The OK Clean Water Project began in 2003 as a partnership between two groups of people - one in Ottawa, Canada, and one in Kumbo, Cameroon, Africa. Sister Cathy Molloy, living in the Kumbo area, invited the Ottawa group to respond to the needs of the people in her tiny village of Tobin. Of the 21 families living there, 11 had no access to potable water and had to rely on a polluted stream or walk long distances for water. The Ottawa group responded by raising $3,000 to help these 11 families. And thus the Ottawa-Kumbo partnership was born and was named "OK Clean Water Project".
